The coming week got off to an early start, on Saturday, June 1st, with the release of the latest “official” Chinese manufacturing sector purchasing managers’ index. The importance of events in this economy is not lost on market participants and comes second only to those in the United States.
The following day will see Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke take to the podium. Investors will be keen to see to what extent, if any, he makes any policy remarks, although it would be highly surprising if his message were to vary at all, comment analysts Digital Look.
Nevertheless, what will centre markets attention will be the monthly US employment report on Friday. While it is often subject to large revisions from one month to the next, if there is one set of data that can heavily influence and shape market forecasts for the economy this is it.
On Thursday Bank of England Governor Sir Mervyn King will chair his last meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee before the arrival of his successor, Mark Carney. No new policy measures are expected.
The Bank’s latest data on its Funding for Lending Scheme (FLS), corresponding to the first quarter, will be out on Monday. “We can only speculate as to the take up over the period, but what is visible now is that mortgage rates have hit all-time lows,” say economists at Investec.
The European Central Bank (ECB) will also hold a policy meeting on Thursday. No change is expected in its policy settings either, given last month’s reduction in its main policy rate. Even so, President Mario Draghi’s press conference following his meeting with the Governing council will be closely watched for any hints regarding the on-going debate about the convenience of negative deposit rates or further new non-standard measures to help periphery economies, for example.
The flow of Eurozone economic data will be quite heavy from the ‘get-go,’ starting with the latest manufacturing sector purchasing managers’ indices on Monday.
Lastly, on Tuesday the Reserve Bank of Australia will hold a policy meeting. There has been some speculation recently regarding the possibility of further rate moves by this central bank. This is of interest given that economy’s natural links to China and the outlook for demand of industrial metals.
